  • Howard Friedenberg's paper Hitless Space Diversity STL Enables IP+Audio in Narrow STL Bands delivered to the Broadcast Engineering Conference at the National Association of Broadcasters 2005 annual convention in Las Vegas. HD Radio™ poses a new challenge to STLs, requiring the ability to transport an Ethernet channel at 300 kbps along side a 44.1 kHz sampled AES digital stereo pair and ultimately fit them into a single 300 kHz STL channel. This requirement is only possible with latest generation digital STLs operating with very high efficiency, e.g. 128 QAM. As QAM rates are increased, also is the sensitivity to multipath. “Hitless” switching enables real time space diversity antenna systems to combat instantaneous multipath fading on microwave paths that commonly occurs in Spring and Fall seasons. In this paper Moseley presents a new "hitless" switched transfer panel that completes a space diversity protected STL link which enables reliable link implementation at 128 QAM.

  • Bill Gould's paper New STL/TSL Solutions for LAN/WAN Extension to Transmitter Sites presented to the Broadcast Engineering Conference at the National Association of Broadcasters 2005 annual convention in Las Vegas. Studio to Transmitter Link (STL) has historically meant a one-way audio path from the studio to the transmitter site. New broadcast applications such as remote mirrored servers, RBDS and IP addressable equipment place bidirectional data requirements on the once simple STL. HD Radio™ deployment now requires an Ethernet connection to the IBOC transmitter. This paper discusses the expanding data requirements and new solutions for digital STL/TSL data transport and adding LAN/WAN connectivity to the transmitter site.
